Wonder Woman (2017)

Synopsis: Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot (Chris Pine) crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true identity.

My review: Despite the initial uproar with Gal Gadot playing the iconic super hero; after viewing the movie I’ve determined she was perfect for the role. While helping to solidify the opening to the DC cinematic universe; this was a much needed basic origin story. Growing up with Lynda Carter’s version of the character; I went into this viewing with an open mind, and this modern day version didn’t disappoint. Even though the movie itself was loaded with CGI effects, it had a darker tone to it much like the previous DC movies that will tie together with the Justice League movie. It will be interesting to see how well the different character personalities will mesh onscreen once together.

The scores:
Action/Violence: 5/10
Language: 0/10
CGI effects blending well into the movie: 3/10
Appealing to comic book fans and not straying too far from source material: 8/10
Should you watch?: 8/10

It Follows (2014)

Synopsis: A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.

Review: my last review is mentioned to be one of the best American horror movies in the last 20 years; so I decided to post one I thought actually deserving of the title. The premise of the movie is that there is some kind of supernatural force (never explained) that tracks down and kills the person that is cursed. The only way to bide time is to sleep with someone else and passing the curse onto the next person’ essentially making it a supernatural STD. Once the force kills the most recent person, it will then move onto the person that previously passed the curse. The movie itself; while being original and fairly fast paced’ isn’t without its flaws. Most notably amongst the flaws is that the force just seems to appear and slowly ramble over to the person like an old school zombie’ then somehow over the course of the movie it develops the ability to pick up and throw things. While only the cursed can see the apparition walking, it can attack others that pose as a threat’ and I use that term loosely because nothing really seems to be able to stop the force.

My scores:
Language: 2/10
Nudity 4/10
Originality: 8/10
Should you watch?: 8/10

I’m not a huge fan of a lot of modern American horror movies because they all seem to rely on jump scares without any real substance, but this one I highly recommend.

Don’t Breathe (2016)

Synopsis: Hoping to walk away with a massive fortune, a trio of thieves break into the house of a blind man who isn’t as helpless as he seems.

The review: the quote on the art poster claims this is the best American horror movie of the last 20 years. That’s not really saying much about the American film industry. The synopsis alone pretty much tells the whole story.
3 thieves break into a blind mans house, blind man dishes out visually impaired justice. Somehow the story takes a turn though and the thieves end up being the sympathetic character. Personally I would’ve rather watched a movie about 50 thieves breaking into the home and Stephen Lang (The blind man) brutally massacres the entire lot of them. There are some tense moments during the film where Lang is walking around trying to find the thieves’ but other than that it’s just a movie about a blind guy with a gun shooting at every noise he hears. The end

I read this was a pretty successful movie financially speaking’ and there’s talk of a sequel; so maybe part 2 will have my 50 theive slaughterfest.

The score:
Language: 2/10
Nudity: 0/10
Blood/gore: 1/10
Thinking Stephen Lang is still a badass at the end of the movie: 6/10
Should you watch? 5/10

Society (1989)

Synopsis: A Beverly Hills teen discovers his parents are part of a gruesome orgy cult for the social elite.

My review: lets assume that most readers have consumed alcohol, or have experienced some type of drug (Legal of course), that has altered their perception before. Now, picture indulging in whatever mind altering choice you’ve made and waiting for it to kick in…..and waiting a little more….. until finally you’re wondering if it’s just not working well and you decide to call it a night; when suddenly it just hits you in full force for 20 minutes and then it quickly wears off and you’re left hungover, worn out or drained from the experience. This is the best analogy I could think of for this movie.

The first hour and 15 minutes you’re just stringing along thinking how odd the movie is or laughing at the 80’s attempt at humor; when suddenly it shifts gears at the end and becomes a whole lot of makeup, practical effects and a lot of mental reasoning to explain what exactly is going on. I won’t spoil anything for those that want to watch and haven’t yet, but I’m going to include some photos so you have something to look forward to.

My score:
Language: 2/10
Nudity: 2/10 (Couple of bare breasts scenes)
The required amount of alcohol or drugs (Legal of course) to get through the movie: 5/10
Should you watch? Just for the final sequence of the movie I’m giving it a 4/10….and here’s why

Prince of Darkness

Poking around in a church cellar, a priest (Donald Pleasence) finds an otherworldly vial filled with slime. Frightened, he brings his discovery to a circle of top scholars and scientists, who eventually learn that the strange liquid is the essence of Satan. The slime then begins to seep out, turning some of the academics into zombified killers. As the possessed battle the survivors, student Kelly (Susan Blanchard) is infected by a large quantity of the liquid and becomes Satan personified.

The second film that some call part of John Carpenter’s Apocalypse trilogy. The first being The Thing, and third being In the Mouth of Madness; despite none of the movies having any sort of link between the three.

I was around 12 or 13 when this film came out’ and despite already being de-sensitized towards horror movies this one stuck with me as one of my favorites. I’ll admit; the dream sequences within the movie were pretty creepy, along with the demonic sound editing used for some of the possessed/zombie characters.

If you’re a fan of the usual jump scares that seem to plague most modern horrors; there’s a few spread throughout the film. If you’re a fan of Carpenters or just appreciate a good Ol’ fashioned Satanic ritual; the I highly recommend this film.

Language: 2/10
Nudity: 0/10
Alice Cooper ramming a broken bicycle through someone 10/10
Overall creepiness: 6/10

Weekend getaway

The girlfriend and I decided to head out of town this past weekend for her birthday. No wi-fi, no cell phone signal; just, some peace and quiet on the lake and a whole lot of food which I’m sure caused me to gain a few extra pounds. I was glad to have this much needed recharge but now ready to get back into the fun of the weeks routine…..movies movies movies

The Belko Experiment (2017)

In a twisted social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high rise corporate office in Begota, Columbia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company’s intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.

I love these movies. It’s not that there is an original story here, or that I’m just a sucker for senseless killing on film’ but watching how this experiment plays out with all of the characters, and how they eventually devolve into self preservation; that’s what I enjoyed watching. there were a few characters I wished would have lingered around longer than they did, but on a small budget of only 5 million dollars I can understand the need to eliminate a few so soon. No spoilers given but of course they set it up for a possible sequel in the future. The practical effects i the film are also one of the highlights. No animated blood spraying, no fake flash of gunfire’ just good old makeup and fake blood.

Language 3/10
Nudity 0/10
Blood/gore 4/10
