American Mary (2012)

Katharine Isabelle plays a young med student struggling with her tuition fees and is drawn into the shady world of underground body modification.

This is a great movie directed by the Soska sisters. The film finds a nice balance between suspense, drama, storytelling, acting and a dash of blood to top it off. Well worth the 1:38:00 run time.

The score:
Language: 4/10
Nudity: 3/10
Original story: 7/10
Rapist getting exactly what he deserves: 10/10
Should you watch?: 8/10

The Supernaturals (1986)

IMG_0068

Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek) is an army sergeant who leads her platoon into the woods of the Deep South on a training exercise. Unfortunately, it is the site where a bunch of yankee soldiers murdered a town of confederates. The corpses of the dead soldiers rise up to wreak revenge.

If you watched the first 10 minutes and then skipped to around the 45 minute mark; you really wouldn’t miss much of the movie. If you’re looking for a good zombie movie this isn’t it’ the corpses are all ghost. If you’re looking for a good ghost movie….this isn’t it either. Now, if you’re looking for a good movie…..ok, this still isn’t it. I, honestly was expecting a little more when I started this flick. It’s a pretty slow burn, and what little action scenes there are felt pretty flat.

The score:
Violence/murder/mayhem/ anything to get this above a 0 score: 2/10
Annoying background music that has an upbeat tone to it when it’s supposed to be serious: 5/10
Nichelle Nichols giving some younger soldiers some sassy lip: 5/10
Should you watch this movie?: 1/10.

Just skip out on this movie, but if you do decide to view it; here’s the full length movie

Dreamscape (1984)

IMG_0067

A government funded project looks into using psychics to enter people’s dreams, with some mechanical help. When a subject dies in his sleep from a heart attack Alex Gardner (Dennis Quaid) becomes suspicious that another of the psychics is killing people in the dreams somehow and that is causing them to die in real life.

So, it’s not Freddy Krueger butchering teens in their sleep, but this movie adds a touch of action and sci-fi to the myth of dying in a dream causing death in reality. The special effects are dated, but it really doesn’t take much away from the film. George Wendt of cheers fame makes a few appearances throughout the movie as well.

Movie score:
Language: 1/10
High tech applications being run on old green screen monitors 5/10
The urge to shout out NORRRMMM during every Wendt appearance 10/10
Should you watch?: 5/10

Movie Trailer

Synopsis: in the near future, Major is the first of her kind: a human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world’s most dangerous criminals.

I’m not familiar with the Manga in which the movie is based off of, so I cannot attest to how accurate or how far it strays from the source material.
The movie itself seemed to fall pretty flat; the CGI effects often felt cartoonish; and I know Hollywood can do better; other times it was visually entertaining. With that being said the film seemed to drag on despite the numerous action scenes, and honestly I couldn’t wait for it to end. I’m not one to get into the whole “White Washing” topic with films, but I felt Scarlett Johansson was possibly the wrong pick for the lead character.

The scores:
Language: 1/10
Action scenes: 4/10
Plot: 3/10
Nudity: 1/10 (ScarJo in a flesh suit counts right?)
Should you watch?: 2/10. The few times that the CGI didn’t look painfully obvious, it was visually appealing

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

One of my favorite modern sci-fi films; Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, and the late great Bill Paxton; is essentially Groundhog’s day (The movie that set the standard for repeating a day over and over), and every other alien invasion story. Cruise’s character gets thrown onto the battlefield against his will and ends up sacrificing himself to kill an alien attacker which in turn coats him in blood enabling him to relive the day again. Upon awakening at the start of the day (Again) he must figure out a way to stop the alien invasion and save the planet; the downside being he has to die each and every day in order for the day to reset. The ending may or may not leave the viewer confused as to what’s going on; but rest assured a sequel is coming that I’m sure will tidy everything up sooner or later

The scores:
Language: 1/10
Nudity: 0/10
The joy of watching Tom Cruise’s character die repeatedly 10/10
Should you watch?: 8/10
